Continued Culture of Container Grown Christmas Trees

Our container grown Christmas trees can stay in their containers in prime condition for about 12 months after purchase. After that the tree requires either potting up into a larger container or planting into the garden border.
An intermediate stage is to stand the container on to bare soil, slightly dug in by about 10 cms which will assist with pot stability and stimulate root growth and thereby letting the tree to self-water. The tree can then be returned indoors once again at Christmas time by gently cutting off any protruding roots from the container base.

If not dug-in, the tree will require regular watering. This is even required in wet weather as the branches tend to shield the container from getting a decent drink. Or better still standing on a saucer to catch rain water.

Whatever course of action is taken , container trees benefit from a regular six-monthly feed of a slow-acting fertiliser. This needs applying in March and September annually. We use and can supply you with a granular slow-acting fertiliser suitable for feeding your tree. ( Yara Mila Complex 12-11-18+5MgO) Simply sprinkle the blue crystals around the container top and let nature do the rest. This same fertiliser can do wonders in maintaining healthy growth of all your hardy garden trees and shrubs. Contact us if you need any further information.
